What does Hijab mean to you?

What does Hijab mean to you?
“My value as a human is defined by my relationship with God, not by my looks. I cover the irrelevant... I don’t answer to the slaves of God on Earth. I answer to their King.”Yasmin Mogahed

Out of the roughly 1 million Muslim women living in the United States, 43% regularly wear the hijab. While it is an expression of modesty and a commandment of Allah, the hijab is also a deeply personal choice made every single day.

Hijab means something different to everyone. We asked our VELA community what the hijab symbolizes to them, and their answers were as beautiful and diverse as the women themselves.

A Public Declaration of Faith and Identity

Most acts of worship—like prayer or charity—are private. Hijab, however, is a bold statement to the world. In today’s world, wearing the hijab is an act of resistance against stereotypes and a proud assertion of Muslim identity. It’s a badge of honor that says, "I am Muslim, and I am proud."

“A Constant Reminder of Purpose”

Our busy lives are designed to distract us. Between work, school, and family, it’s easy to lose sight of our true purpose: worshipping Allah (SWT). For many in our community, the hijab acts as a physical reminder to center every action around faith and submission to the Creator.

“Empowerment through Control: Strength and Confidence”

Critics often misinterpret the hijab as oppressive, but for the women who wear it, it is a source of empowerment. It gives us control over our physical selves and who has access to us. True confidence doesn’t always come from displaying one's body; for many, it comes from the strength found in covering it.

“Highlighting Inner Beauty Over the Irrelevant”

When the outer beauty is concealed, the focus shifts. As Yasmin Mogahed says, we cover the "irrelevant." This allows our intellect, kindness, and character to shine. Our self-worth is no longer tied to physical trends but to the depth of our souls.

“Conclusion: Celebrating Your Unique Journey ”

VELA was founded to revolutionize how the world views hijab and modest style. Whether you have been wearing it for years or are just taking your first steps, we celebrate you, your strength, and your unique journey.

As a new Muslim convert, wearing the hijab has pulled me out of the years of keeping my belief in Islam a secret. I feel as though I am now treated publicly as a Muslim, and this has saved me from many of the social pressures around me. Being Muslim has changed my life, and by wearing the hijab I am proudly sharing my religion with everyone that looks at me. Most of all, I am honored to serve as an example of modesty to young Muslimas, and InshaAllah seeing my hijab will help them feel more comfortable.
