Few pieces in a modest wardrobe are as easy to rely on as an abaya. It’s one of those pieces that can instantly make getting dressed feel simpler: whether you’re heading out for errands, meeting friends, going to Friday prayer, or dressing for an occasion that calls for something a little more elevated.

What makes abayas so versatile is that they no longer belong to just one kind of setting. They can feel effortless and casual one day, then elegant and perfectly formal, depending on the fabric, cut, and what you wear underneath. Once you understand how different styles work, it becomes much easier to choose an abaya that actually fits into your preferred styles.

Abaya Styles and What Makes Each One Different

The style of an abaya often shapes how you end up wearing it. Open abayas are usually the easiest to style because they work almost like a long outer layer. They’re perfect for days when you want to build an outfit from basics you already wear: straight-leg jeans, a fitted tee, or a simple matching set is my typical go-to. An open abaya can make even the most casual outfit feel intentional without much effort.

Closed abayas are often the easiest choice when you want something simple and complete. You put one on, add your scarf, shoes, and you’re done! There’s something especially easy about having a piece that already feels like a full outfit without needing much styling around it. I typically prefer a lighter color abaya with a pop of color hijab for typical day to day wear. Especially beaded abayas, or ones with designs that shine on their own, serve as a beautiful outfit, with minimal effort. 

Bigger-style abayas tend to feel softer because of their wider sleeves and relaxed shape, while more structured abayas can feel sharper and a little more polished, especially if you’re dressing for work, dinner, or a more formal setting.

Why Fabric Matters More Than You Think

Fabric changes the entire feel of an abaya, sometimes even more than the cut itself. Chiffon abayas, for example, have a softness that makes them feel instantly elegant. They move beautifully, which is why they often have that flowy, almost princess-like feel that I personally prefer. Even a simple chiffon abaya can look dressed up because the fabric creates movement so naturally. 

Because chiffon is lightweight, what you wear underneath matters more. A slip, inner dress, or simple coordinated layer underneath usually helps the abaya fall better while keeping everything comfortable.

Lace creates a completely different effect. Some lace abayas come in thicker materials that offer more coverage and structure, which makes them easy to wear without much thought underneath. Others use lighter lace that feels softer and more delicate, giving you more flexibility depending on how you want to layer. In the winter, I prefer to add a thicker abaya over a sweater and jeans. In the summer, I prefer a lighter abaya material not only for style, but to help in managing the heat while also remaining modest and beautiful!

Not every abaya needs to serve the same purpose, and that’s part of what makes building an abaya wardrobe feel personal. A chiffon abaya might be the one you reach for when you want softness and movement. A lace abaya may feel right when you want texture and detail. A simple crepe abaya may end up being the one you wear most because it works for everyday life without needing much thought. Over time, certain fabrics naturally become attached to certain moods, seasons, and moments. That ease is part of why abayas remain such an important piece in so many wardrobes: they offer modesty, comfort, and style all at once.
