How to Style Bold Prints: Navigating "Scary" Fabrics

Many people associate Halloween with a night of fears, but in the hijabi world, one of the most common fears is wearing a printed hijab. Printed hijabs have become popular over the past few years especially printed modal hijabs and one of my favorite VELA scarves is the Navy Marble (pictured below!) However, despite its popularity, many hijabis are hesitant to wear them. Today we will be discussing some of the common ‘’fears’’ surrounding printed hijabs and how you can wear them! After reading this article, I hope you will feel more excited and confident to embrace printed hijabs as a part of your outfits!

To Print or Not to Print…? Let's tackle some common concerns regarding printed hijabs.

It may look "too much"

This is one of the top reasons as to why many hijabis tend to opt for solid or plain scarves as opposed to printed scarves. It can be tricky to coordinate your outfit’s style with a printed hijab, but the key is to balance your outfit’s colors and textures with the printed scarf, so that it doesn’t look "overwhelming."

Feeling self conscious about a print

"Is leopard print really my style?"

“Does Ombre Olive look good with my skin tone?”

These are some examples of how people tend to feel uneasy with certain prints. Again, this should not deter you from trying out these styles with your outfits because the best way to wear these prints is to balance them with your outfit!

Balancing the Prints with a "Solid" Outfit

The easiest way to style a printed hijab is to wear it with a solid colored outfit. For example, in the image below, I am wearing VELA’s Enchanted Feathers hijab with a black tunic. Printed scarves instantly elevate solid outfits, presenting you to be more stylish!

Match the Print With a Printed Part of Your Outfit

Yes, it is possible to wear stripes on stripes, as long as the print itself isn’t too bold or an entirely different color scheme. For example, you wouldn’t want to wear a black pinstripe scarf with a green pinstripe top because even though those prints are the same, the colors are very different.

You can wear the VELA Deco Linen Scarf with a beige/black striped top because the color palettes are the same for both the scarf and your top and these prints would pair well with each other!

Play with Textures and Prints!

Most people don’t realize that they can wear printed scarves even if their outfit has different textures! Some textures include lace, pleats, leather, fur, sequins, etc. This includes not just the main outfit- (top and pants) but also accessories like handbags and shoes.

For example, if you are wearing a blue lace dress you can style it with VELA’s Baby Blue Floral Modal! (If you haven’t purchased it yet check it out now!)
