Salaam VELA fam! This blog post will focus on the meaning behind the hijab. With the warm June weather, VELA’s Summer Resort collection has provided women with colorful and stylish modals for coverage and comfort. VELA has been curating beautiful fabrics ranging from modals to chiffons and jerseys since 2010! While hijabs are beautiful and sophisticated, they aren’t meant to be exclusively a fashion statement. Let’s dive into the purpose behind the hijab!
What is the Hijab?
The word "hijab" has Arabic origins which means "veil." The purpose of the hijab is to serve as a veil for a woman’s hair and neck. Hijab is a form of modesty and women wear the hijab to portray their devotion to God. The hijab shouldn’t be worn due to force or external pressures from family/spouse, etc. This is a common misconception that unfortunately many people, including Muslims don’t know about. Women are the ones that get to decide when they want to wear the hijab. You need to have a sense of clarity and commitment before wearing the hijab because you would be essentially wearing it for the rest of your life. If one is pressured to wear the hijab, for whatever reason, they will begin to resent it and possibly end up taking it off as well.
Finding Peace In The Hijab
There are good hijab days and bad hijab days. If you’re in a rush to go to work or school, and if you are attempting to get your hijab secure with a magnet/pin on a windy day, just to name a few. Finding peace in the hijab means to be able to find comfort and motivation to wear it in the ups and downs of life. If you are struggling finding the right fabric for your hair, VELA offers a variety of different fabrics - modal, crinkle chiffon, jersey, etc. As Muslims, we should always try to uplift, support, and encourage each other especially when it comes to wearing the hijab. Maybe you have been thinking about wearing the hijab, but are hesitating because you feel that you would be the only one in your class, or the only one in your family to wear it. Choosing to wear the hijab is an enormous blessing on its own and it is a sign of maturity and devotion to practicing Islam.
