How To Build Better Relationship As a Hijabi

How To Build Better Relationship As a Hijabi

Making friends and keeping those friendships alive can be tough, whether you're an introvert or an extrovert. It gets even trickier when you start taking your faith seriously. You may find that some people you once considered lifelong friends begin to drift away.

I've come across many stories of Muslim women who, after deciding to wear the hijab, notice a decline in their friendships. It seems as though Allah SWT is helping to separate those who are meant to stay in your life from those who may hold you back in your spiritual journey.

If this resonates with you, know that you're not alone—we’re all in this together. It can be hard to accept, but remember that trusting Allah means believing He knows what’s best for you and is guiding the changes in your life.

Sometimes, letting go of certain people can be more beneficial than holding onto them, as it opens the door to better companionship. And what could be more fulfilling than having Allah SWT as your companion?

In your journey to discover the right people to surround yourself with, whether friends or a life partner, it’s important to stand your ground against any actions or words that could divert you from Islam.

How Does a Hijabi Build Better Relationships?

With that being said, you need to understand that the hijab represents more than just modesty and faith. It not only symbolizes religious devotion but also acts as a catalyst for building deeper relationships within families, among colleagues, and within communities.

For example, it becomes easy to set yourself apart from others, and being a hijabi makes it easier for you to avoid uncomfortable situations like responding ‘No’ to your colleague who invites you for a happy hour after work. People are also likely to feel at ease asking you questions about religion because they view you as trustworthy.

It’s just not just about helping others understand you; it’s also about understanding others. Be open to learn about different cultures, traditions, and perspectives. By appreciating diversity, you create a space where mutual respect and deeper connections thrive.

Next, in order to build better relationships either with other people or within yourself, always seek positive company. Your circle of friends and acquaintances has a significant impact on your well-being. Make the means to seek relationships that uplift, respect, and support you.

Find a halaqah or a sisters-only class around to start developing friendship. The more you surround yourself around people who understand the religion, the better it becomes to practise your faith. Furthermore, being proactive in initiating conversations about common hobbies can create lasting bonds. For example, if you enjoy painting, you might attend art workshops where you can meet like-minded individuals who appreciate creativity just as much as you do.

Be quick in distancing yourself from negativity and those who do not value your presence or beliefs. A strong support system makes a world of difference in feeling accepted and valued.

Being a hijabi in a non-Muslim country is hard, it’s no secret. Encountering ignorance or bias can be frustrating, but handling such situations with patience and grace is key. Sometimes, a calm and informative response can change someone’s perspective.

However, if you encounter negativity that seems unwilling to change, it’s okay to walk away and prioritize your peace.

Last but not least, healthy relationships are built on mutual respect. Be clear about your values and boundaries, whether it’s related to religion, personal space, social settings, or conversations. At the same time, be mindful of others’ boundaries and beliefs. Clear communication helps avoid misunderstandings and ensures a respectful dynamic in any relationship.
