Hijab Tips for Hot Weather
Salaam VELA fam! Hope everyone is enjoying their summer! Personally, I love summer but most people don’t consider it to be their favorite season due to the hot weather. For us hijabis, the hot weather can definitely be a hit or miss for us when it comes to fashion. Summer means maxi dresses, pastels, lighter colors, and it also means heat, humidity, etc. After wearing the hijab for 10 years now alhumdulillah, I have drawn on my own experiences to share some tips for hijabis in the summer!
Issues that Hijabis Face in the Summer
Humidity
Whether you live in an area with humidity or not, summer brings out a universal issue for everyone-sweating. Sweating in your clothes is one thing and it’s another to be sweating in your hijab! When sweat accumulates in your hijab it can cause a gross sticky feeling and if you are wearing an undercap, it may also cause acne breakouts if you aren’t washing your hijab or undercap often!
Finding a balance between modesty and fewer layers
In the winter, our goal is to bundle up and wear more layers and for hijabis it is easier to find modest fashion finds- cardigans, cats, jackets, sweaters, etc. However, in the summer, it can be a struggle to find modest clothing that isn’t see through, tight, cropped, etc. How many of you have walked into a store in the summer, whether it’s Forever21, etc. and were not able to find a decent outfit? As hijabis, we need to find a median for summer friendly clothes that are also modest!
Finding the right hijab material and style for the season
This past year, pashminas were all the rage. The colorful paisley printed textured fabric was a staple for the cold and chilly weather, but for the summer, it would be better to store these scarves back in the closet. The best hijab materials for this summer are modals, chiffon, and jersey. VELA prides itself on providing the most stylish and sustainable modal scarves! Feel free to check out our summer drop here!
Summer Tips for Hijabis
Now that we have identified some of the common issues that hijabis face in the summer, let’s talk about some tips and life hacks!
1. Invest in neck covers or sleeves
If you want to wear a t-shirt or even a short-sleeved dress and are worried about the neckline, you should definitely purchase sleeves or neck covers instead of having to wear a full sleeve top underneath.
2. Breathable Undercaps
My favorite undercap is VELA’s Feather Undercap . This undercap has a cotton headpiece attached with a mesh cap at the back which is perfect to allow your hair to breathe in the hot weather!
3. Opt for looser styles
Back in 2015, I’m sure we were all very impressed with the popular volumized hijab look. This style may have been trendy then but it isn’t the best choice for the summer. Try to wear loose hijab styles so that your skin and hair can breathe easily. Tighter fabrics especially in the summer can cause migraines and headaches! A simple hijab style like the over-the shoulder look is preferred because it requires minimal effort and will still look flowy and elegant.
