Addressing your concerns: A Q&A with VELA Co-CEOs

We pride ourselves on being community driven and open to our community members. In the spirit of transparency and community, we're addressing the questions you've been asking. From our production process to sustainability, we’re diving deep into the topics that matter most to you. We sat down with VELA Co-CEOs Tasneem and Marwa to get the inside scoop on everything from quality and pricing to the uniqueness of our designs. Here’s what they had to say.

Q: What is the production process like at VELA?

Marwa: We’re all about slow fashion at VELA. Every print is designed with intention, and we carefully select colors that complement all skin tones and reflect the season’s best. After that, we go through rigorous sampling and approvals to make sure everything is perfect before it reaches you.

Q: Are VELA products actually ethically produced?

Tasneem: Absolutely. We work exclusively with factories that provide fair wages and maintain safe, clean working conditions. Plus, we recycle all our fabrics, ensuring our production is as sustainable as possible.

Q: Why is VELA slowing down its production?

Marwa: We’ve heard our community loud and clear about the demand for restocks, but when we scaled too quickly, we noticed a dip in quality. Our values as a brand matter more, so we’ve returned to our slow fashion roots to maintain the high standards you expect from us.

Q: What happened to VELA’s quality recently?

Tasneem: We know some products weren’t as soft as usual. That’s because the process at VELA can’t be rushed. Slowing down our production ensures that every piece meets our strict quality standards.

Q: Why are VELA prices higher than some other brands?

Marwa: Our prices reflect not only the fair wages we pay to our skilled workers in India and our incredible team of Muslim women in the U.S., but also the months of meticulous design work by our talented designers. The cost of our scarves is never just the price of our signature fabric and fair labor in India—it’s so much more than that. We take pride in our growth and the way we manage our business, and we want to share that there’s so much more involved. From designers to larger internal team members, everyone is paid competitive market rates. It’s about empowerment, supporting our community, and staying true to our values of quality and integrity.

Q: What makes a VELA scarf so special?

Tasneem: When you buy a VELA scarf, you’re not just buying a piece of fabric—you’re joining a community. Each piece is curated with care, ensuring that you feel confident and special every time you wear it.

Q: How is VELA committed to sustainability?

Marwa: Sustainability is at the core of what we do. We recycle all materials and produce in small batches to minimize waste.

Q: Why do colors and batches sometimes differ?

Tasneem: Every batch at VELA is unique because we hand-dye them in small quantities. This artisanal approach means that no two restocks are ever identical, adding to the exclusivity of each piece.
