Social Justice Warriors: Muslim Women Leading the Charge
Salaam VELA fam! WIth the recent election results and the ongoing war in Gaza, Lebanon, and other countries, todays’ blog post will be focusing on highlighting the efforts of a few hijabis and how they have worked to address social justice issues. Today we will be introducing a few social justice warriors along with their mission and why they chose to become social media activists.
Meet Dania Darwish
Dania is the founder of the Asiyah Women’s Center in New York. Since 2018, Asiyah Women’s Center is the first women’s shelter that houses victims of domestic violence and women of color. Some of their work includes providing housing and resources, fundraisers to support their organization, immigrant/refugee mentorship programs, civic engagement opportunities with Muslim Community Table, and the Rahma Reproductive Justice Program.
Last Ramadan, VELA collaborated with the Asiyah Women’s Center to create the Launch Good campaign to raise around $4 million to address the healthcare disparities in Gaza, Palestine.
Meet Marwa and Tasneem Atik
In case you guys don’t already know, Marwa and Tasneem, are the co-founders of VELA. Through VELA, Marwa and Tasneem have been curating textile designs for hijabis and one of the best fabrics, also known as modals. In addition to this, they have consistently been involved in numerous fundraising initiatives to help Muslims around the world.
VELA has made its mission to donate 100% of its Solidarity Palestine Capsule proceeds to provide humanitarian relief in Gaza and is proud to continue to support and raise awareness for the war in Palestine.
One of the organizations that VELA has collaborated with is called Healing Our Homeland (HOH). HOH is a nonprofit organization that is committed to helping Palestinians. From providing food parcels and winter clothing to hygiene kits and sanitation supplies, HOH has been working to provide humanitarian aid during the war in Palestine.
